Virginia Military Institute Cadet Otis Allan Glazebrook believed that college students could help heal the deep-seated animosities that were so deeply pronounced at the end of the Civil War—that’s why he and two fellow VMI cadets founded Alpha Tau Omega. Deeply religious, Glazebrook was intrigued by Greek letter societies but wanted a Greek letter fraternity based on brotherly love as exemplified by Jesus Christ.

Today, Alpha Tau Omega is one of the largest national fraternities in the country with more than 140,000 living alumni and 6,500 undergraduate members at more than 140 chapters and colonies.

ATO is known for its cutting edge leadership development programming. LeaderShape, Inc., which is recognized by higher education professionals as offering premier leadership development programs, was created and developed by ATO. ATO National Fraternity programs promote the ideals and principles in the Creed.
